PET-CT is a diagnostic imaging procedure primarily utilized for identifying and monitoring cancer, as well as various other conditions such as unexplained fever, inflammatory bowel disease, cognitive disease, and myocardial viability. This examination is conducted using a specialized PET-CT machine, which combines two scans:
PET Scan: Positron Emission Tomography, or PET scan, involves the injection of a small amount of radioactive tracer into the patient's vein. This tracer is actively absorbed by the most metabolically active cancer cells in the body. The PET scan captures and quantitatively assesses the uptake of the tracer, revealing the presence of cancer and its metastatic sites.
CT Scan: Computed Tomography, or CT scan, provides detailed anatomical imaging of cancer within the body. Contrast material may be administered intravenously (unless there are elevated creatinine levels or a history of allergy to contrast agents). By examining the images, medical professionals can determine if the cancer involves distant organs and plan surgical interventions if necessary.

PET CT Scan Procedure
- Please arrive 15–30 minutes before your scheduled PET scan appointment.
- Upon arrival at the centre, our reception staff will verify your documents and provide guidance.
- Our technical team will assess your vital signs to rule out common issues such as fever and high blood pressure. A blood glucose test will be performed on-site to ensure the suitability of your scan.
- The PET tracer (FDG) will be administered, followed by a waiting period of 45 minutes to 2 hours for the tracer to distribute throughout your body.
- You will be required to lie still in the machine for 15–20 minutes and follow breath-holding instructions as directed.
- Unless contraindicated or in case of elevated creatinine levels, intravenous CT contrast will be administered. Subsequently, the contrast CT scan will be performed, lasting approximately 3 to 5 minutes.
- If recommended by the nuclear physician, you may need to remain in the machine for a few extra minutes after the standard scan for delayed phase acquisitions.
- As PET-CT entails a comprehensive examination, our team of medical professionals will review and generate your report within 24–48 working hours. You will receive an SMS notification once the PET scan report is finalized.
